This October, in conjunction with breast cancer awareness month, we’d like to take a moment to encourage all women to stay more informed about the beauty products you use. Enjoying the sensorial benefits of cosmetics is wonderful for your wellbeing, but at the same time, don’t forget to choose products that are safe!
Since 1991, Neal’s Yard Remedies has been certified by the Soil Association. This means that our organic products are just as kind to the earth as they are to your skin, because they do not contain harmful pesticides, GM ingredients, controversial chemicals, parabens and phthalates, as well as synthetic colours, dyes or fragrances.
One of the most-talked about products that have raised concerns over the years is deodorant. It’s believed that because our major lymph nodes are located at the underarms, the harmful chemicals (like aluminium salts and parabens) used to prevent sweating can impair the body’s natural ability to sweat, thus blocking the lymph nodes. As our breasts are extremely close to the underarms, this increases the risk of developing breast cancer.
Although there is still no conclusive evidence that chemical-laden anti-perspirants and deodorants will lead to cancer, the general consensus is that it’s always better to play it safe, just like choosing organic vegetables at the supermarket.
Natural & safe deodorant options

What’s NOT in our deodorants:
1. They DON’T contain Aluminium.
Aluminium salts have an anti-perspirant effect, acting like plugs to prevent your pores from producing sweat. If the skin is not allowed to release toxins by sweating, the concern is that the body cannot rid itself of any potentially cancer-causing substances, which stays trapped in the body.
2. They DON’T contain Triclosan.
Research indicates that this antifungal/antimicrobial preservative may contribute to antibiotic resistance. Instead, we use Shikimic Acid (a very mild exfoliant) in our roll-on deodorants to keep odours away.
3. They DON’T contain Parabens.
There are many concerns about these synthetic preservatives because of their ability to mimic the functions of estrogen, which may result in hormonal imbalance.
4. They DON’T contain Synthetic Fragrances.
Synthetic fragrances can trigger allergies, especially for the delicate underarm area. We use 100% pure essential oils to fragrance our deodorants instead, and you can find them listed out individually for each product!
