Making Sure Our Blue Bottle Stay Green
We use recyclable packaging, sourced wherever possible from the UK to reduce transport miles. Find out about other steps we're taking to reduce the impact of our packaging, and how you can help.
OUR PACKAGING STRATEGY
Our packaging is designed to ensure our products reach you in top condition, but it also needs to be easy to use, practical, beautiful and have minimal environmental impact.
REDUCE - Minimise packaging components
REUSE - Use recycled & sustainable materials
RECYCLE - Enable post-use recycling
We aim to minimise overall packaging by keeping it as simple as possible, helping to save resources and reduce emissions during manufacture. This also reduces emissions from transporting the packaging to us and, when filled, to our stores, stockists and consultants worldwide.
We can't re-fill the packaging used in our organic skincare, but we can use 'pre-loved' material to make it from! Never one for half measures, our bus plastic bottles are British-made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials. They are more energy efficient to produce, and divert waste from potential landfill.
All our blue glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and lids, plus our cartons, are easily recyclable. Check our recycling guide below.
Our 200ml hair care packaging changed from glass to a 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic bottle in 2009 - saving an incredible 90% in packaging weight and 225g (52%) CO2 per bottle.
We're fond of our blue bottles and jars. The blue pigment reduces the light reaching the contents, helping to protect the delicate natural fragrances and herbal properties, allowing us to make skincare with few, if any, preservatives.
Our family-friendly one litre bottles are big on content but small on plastic. They use just under twice the amount of plastic to hold up to five times as much product as our 200ml bottles (and they're better value for you too!)
PS... of course absolutely none of our packaging contains phthalates or bisphenol-A.
Made in Great Britain
When we started, back in 1981, our iconic blue glass bottles and jars were made in France and Spain. In 2008 we were able to finally switch to a UK manufacturer for our jars, and after a long development project, from summer 2014 we are delighted to be bringing our blue glass bottles home to the UK too. They are now expertly produced in West Yorkshire - and even have a branded stamp on their bottom so you can be sure they're the real deal.
We're proud that the majority of our packaging is sourced in the UK, some very close to home - our product labels and the boxes for our factory are made just a few miles down the road.
All our product cartons, catalogues and other marketing materials are produced from ethically accredited paper and board. FSC certification ensures that products come from well managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.
We hate waste, so we're delighted to have a family run business who are transforming our not-quite-perfect blue glass bottles and jars into beautiful dishes and vases. We also regularly upcycle for store displays, a stunning example is blue glass bottle chandelier in our Westfield store. We hope this inspires you to get creative and reuse your bottles in your own way.
World Land Trust
Help save endangered habitats without lifting a finger with our Christmas gifts, which are packaged with FSC certified and Carbon Balanced Paper.
This eco friendly packaging - part of the World Land Trust's Carbon Balanced programme - has helped us to protect 13,000 m2 of precious forest and offset over 150 tonnes of CO2 since March 2012. The programme offsets carbon emissions by purchasing and protecting tropical forest under threat of deforestation.
As World Land Trust patron Sir David Attenborough puts its the programme "really does give us a way of helping put back what we are taking away."
